The Timberjacks gained 398 yards at the Roughnecks in week twelve and lost 24-21, because the yards never became the score: they put three field goals into the air and none came through, and the afternoon's only turnover was theirs, and the field goal the Roughnecks made of it turned out to be the whole margin.
Rhett Loomis went 16 of 26 for 204 and gave none of it away, and when the Roughnecks wanted a touchdown before the half he kept the ball himself from six yards out — a thirty-two-year-old the card calls a game manager, scoring on his own legs against the club that had him seven seasons. He handed the ball to the official and jogged off.
This club drafted him, bought him back at $23 million, and let him go last spring at $38 million. His new employers are 6-4-1. The Timberjacks are 3-8.
In week nine I put it on the record that I would ask him about that, so after the game I did — whether he wanted to say anything about the Timberjacks. “No. Thank you though.” It is, word for word, what he said when I asked about the suspension.
