Lorenzo Hobbeson carried twenty-four times for seventy-five yards in the Marauders' 27-13 win at the Timberjacks, scored twice, and finished at 17,992 career rushing yards — eight short of a number he says he has known since he was thirty. Nothing he ran all day gained more than eight, and he began the day needing eighty-three.
The final drive counted it out. The game was decided and the club was bleeding the clock, so it went to him three more times: one yard, then two, then, forty-three seconds from the end, nothing.
In week eight I wrote that 18,000 lands in the final fortnight, priced off the twenty-six yards a week the three weeks before it had paid. Since then he has run sixty-eight, sixty-eight and seventy-five.
He was asked about the eight and answered generously, the way he answers everything, about the line and the Dredgers and a fourteen-point road win, and one sentence in the middle did the work: “I know where I stopped.”
The Dredgers come to the Marauders in week twelve, and the board makes it nine and a half. I am rarely surprised. This week I am, in print: he crosses in week twelve, six weeks before my fortnight ends. What the year after is worth still lands in the spring.
