Orrin Quarles finds it, in year 9

Wendell Sowerbutts, notebook

Orrin Quarles QB
Smelters

Orrin Quarles: 131 yards. He was cut twice before his twenty-fourth birthday, which the record will now have to accommodate. He keeps his father's work gloves in his locker, which his teammates have stopped remarking on. It counts the same as anybody else's.

He has 611 yards from scrimmage in four seasons, and seven touchdowns. He got to 339 once. Not this time.

Twenty-four, and Doverville, Georgia before that. Around the building he runs hot, and everybody has decided to live with it.

Smelters, 7-6, and fourteen weeks gone. Nolan Danforth is in year three of it.

This feature ran in the paper in week 14 of 1980. The rest of the season is there too.
