The long way round: Cyrus Garrity goes for 130

Ruth Fairbanks, features

Cyrus Garrity RB
The Custodians

Cyrus Garrity had 130 yards. He was drafted late, on the strength of one game nobody else watched. Out of Ives Polytechnic, which sends one of these to the league about once a decade. It is a long way from Osaka, Japan, and he did not come the easy way.

The ledger, after three seasons: 2,014 yards, twenty-six scores. This is the best of them.

Twenty-five years old. Ask anybody: he is the first man in the building most mornings.

The club is 6-3. Nolan Fenwick is new. He is out of contract after this.

He reads on the team plane, actual books, which his teammates find hilarious, and always has.

This feature ran in the paper in week 10 of 1979. The rest of the season is there too.
