223 yards, and a road nobody would recommend

Wendell Sowerbutts, notebook

Sterling Threadgill QB
Firebrands

223 yards from a man who was a track man who was talked into it by a coach who never let go. The scouting industry declines to comment. He carries a chess set on the road and beats everyone, which his teammates have stopped remarking on. It counts the same as anybody else's.

6,683 yards over eleven seasons. Ninety-nine touchdowns. 120 games. This is the best of them. For two clubs.

He turned thirty-two this year. He is from Phoenix, Arizona. Around the building he says almost nothing and is listened to anyway. He dug graves for a summer and says it was the best job he ever had, once.

Firebrands, 5-2, and seven weeks gone. Barney Grit is in year eleven of it.
