The long way round: Shawn Harkless Jr. goes for 108

Shawn Harkless Jr. RB
Millwrights

I have been doing this long enough to have written off men like Shawn Harkless Jr., who was undrafted out of Hollisburg, signed the Tuesday after for the minimum. 108 yards is the league's way of saying nothing is settled. He is 24, and he has never been described as easy to coach. It counts the same as anybody else's.

975 yards over three seasons. Seven touchdowns. Thirty-three games. None of the others were this good.

He is from Doverville, Georgia. In another life he played the trombone well enough to be offered a scholarship for it.

Millwrights, 6-8, and fifteen weeks gone. Bing Boyce is in year three of it.

He has worn the same undershirt since his rookie year and had it repaired twice, and always has.

This feature ran in the paper in week 15 of 2001. The rest of the season is there too.
