Beckett Ratliff is back, and immediately useful

Chip Nutbeam, hot take

Beckett Ratliff QB
Firebrands

Beckett Ratliff returned from an ankle and put up 24.8 points.

The ledger, after nine seasons: 11,989 yards, 175 scores. There was a 1,834-yard year in there. This is not it. He has done it in three buildings.

He is thirty, out of Osaka, Japan. Ask anybody: he is popular in a way that does not show up anywhere useful. He was a late bloomer who did not start a game until he was a college senior. He dug graves for a summer and says it was the best job he ever had, once.

The club is 9-4. Barney Grit is in year seven of it.

He refuses to be taped by anybody but the same assistant trainer, and always has.

This feature ran in the paper in week 14 of 2001. The rest of the season is there too.
