Firebrands without Grant Cutlery again

Ruth Fairbanks, features

Grant Cutlery WR
Firebrands

Grant Cutlery walked off under his own power and did not come back. It is an MCL, and it is the rest of the season. The backup inherits the job for now.

Across seven seasons: 2,524 yards from scrimmage, nine touchdowns, seventy-three games. He got to 699 once. Not this time. He has done it in two buildings.

He turned twenty-eight this year. He is from Coalport, Alabama. Around the building he is the first man in the building most mornings. He was a late bloomer who did not start a game until he was a college senior.

Firebrands are 1-0 through one weeks. Barney Grit is in year five of it.

One more thing: he is the last man off the field, every week, without exception.

This feature ran in the paper in week 1 of 1999. The rest of the season is there too.
