There is a version of Mercy Odom's life where none of this happens. He was a late bloomer who did not start a game until he was a college senior. Instead: 111 yards. Two of them found the end zone, in game 9 of his season. It is a long way from Newark, New Jersey, and he did not come the easy way.
He has 4,586 yards from scrimmage in ten seasons, and fifty touchdowns. There was a 1,854-yard year in there. This is not it. Three clubs have had him.
Thirty-three years old. Ask anybody: he is the first man in the building most mornings.
The club is 10-6. Isaiah Ulmer is in year six of it.
Odom never takes his helmet off between series.
