The long way round: Yancy Steele goes for 164

Wendell Sowerbutts, notebook

Bighorns

164 yards from a man who was cut twice before his twenty-fourth birthday. The scouting industry declines to comment. He never takes his helmet off between series, which his teammates have stopped remarking on. It counts the same as anybody else's.

10,482 yards over seven seasons. 167 touchdowns. 112 games. His best was 2,282. This is not that, yet.

He is twenty-eight, out of Chicago, Illinois. Around the building he says almost nothing and is listened to anyway.

Bighorns are 7-8 through sixteen weeks. Gideon Adeyemi is in year five of it. There is one year left on the deal.

This feature ran in the paper in week 16 of 1988. The rest of the season is there too.
