"The Bye Week"

Hal Vandergrift, veteran beat

Squirrel Nakamura RB
Pikemen

Squirrel Nakamura has earned the name The Bye Week. He earned it for 8 straight weeks of nothing.

1,769 yards over three seasons. Eight touchdowns. Forty-nine games. He got to 784 once. Not this time.

Twenty-five, and Lagos, Nigeria before that. Around the building he is the one the young players actually ask. He was found at a regional combine by a scout whose flight had been cancelled. He worked the overnight shift at a grain elevator, once.

Pikemen are 8-6 through fifteen weeks. Ambrose Winterbottom is new.

Has a rule about not reading anything written about him, which he breaks.

This feature ran in the paper in week 15 of 1986. The rest of the season is there too.
